Asia’s 1st Exhibition Celebrating 200 Years of Couture

K11 MUSEA welcomed an unprecedented celebration of fashion spanning 200 years of couture in December 2022, inviting visitors on a journey of imagination and splendour.

A cultural exchange from east to west, past to present and beyond, this first-ever exhibition titled The Love of Couture: Artisanship in Fashion Beyond Time was a tribute to the indispensable influence of fashion throughout history.

Developed by K11 in collaboration with the V&A and designed by revered Hong Kong Production Designer William Chang Suk Ping, with UBS as the title sponsor, the exhibition showcased pieces from the V&A’s collection, and 6 emerging fashion designers’ responses to the storied garments.

William Chang Suk Ping (張叔平)
Recognised as one of Hong Kong’s most esteemed production designers, fashion designers, stylists, and film editors, William Chang Suk Ping brought his creative vision to the once-in-a-lifetime exhibition at K11 MUSEA.

The V&A
The curation of 12 British and French womenswear pieces from the V&A, the world’s leading museum of art, design, and culture, spanned from the Victorian era to the 1960s, highlighting key moments in the history of couture.

6 Emerging Fashion Designers
Initiating a dialogue between the past and present, east and west, 6 East Asian fashion designers take inspiration from the pieces in the V&A’s collection to create their own contemporary response.

Tomo Koizumi
Japanese designer Tomo Koizumi was the breakout star at 2019 New York Fashion Week, supported by world-famous Katie Grand and Marc Jacobs. Most recently worn by Japanese singer MISIA for her performance at the Tokyo Olympics 2021, Koizumi’s work is instantly recognisable for his signature colourful ruffle costumes.

Celine Kwan
A newcomer to the fashion scene, Hong Kong designer Celine Kwan recently debuted her
Autumn/Winter 2022 collection at Paris Fashion Week. Already catching the eye of global celebrities such as Lizzo, Kwan’s designs explore transformation, functionality, and technology for sustainable fashion.

Sensen Lii
Chinese designer Sensen Lii is a graduate of the globally recognised Antwerp Royal Academy of Arts. In 2019, he founded his own brand WINDOWSEN, and has since been worn by global superstars including Madonna, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Grimes, Sia, and Timothée Chalamet.

Ryunosuke Okazaki
A finalist for the LVMH 2022 Prize, Hiroshima-born Japanese designer Ryunosuke Okazaki’s designs contemplate the connection between humans and nature, commonly incorporating the concept of prayer as a thematic pillar of his work.

Sohee Park
Known as “Miss Sohee”, the South Korean womenswear designer made her international debut at Milan Fashion week supported by Dolce & Gabbana. Most recently worn by Taylor Hill at 2022 Met Gala, Park’s designs experiment with hand embroidery and dyeing techniques rooted in her Korean heritage.

Yueqi Qi
Chinese designer Yueqi Qi draws inspiration from traditional Chinese artisanship, boldly reinterprets crafts such as beading and embroidery to create surprising collisions between Chinese and western culture.
