'Painting with History in a Room Filled with People with Funny Names 3' Admission Ticket - Korakrit Arunanondchai

Thai artist Korakrit Arunanondchai creates a narrative of a denim painter’s life based on both fiction and social realities of his homeland through videos, paintings and mannequins.

The immersive installation is composed of two parts: The Body and The Spirit. The former is a series of dynamic paintings made on bleached denim, while the latter is a video where the artist converses with the spirit Chantri.

The exhibition explores and deconstructs the religious correlations in Thailand in the form of popular culture, building a unique universe where all entities co-exist.

Always I Trust

2014 / Colour / 6’26” / in Mandarin with Chinese & English subtitles

Featuring acclaimed Hong Kong actress Carina Lau, this video is inspired by a spam email sent to Cheng Ran, the artist behind this work. The computer-generated message somehow embodies a sense of human touch with a series of slang terms and spelling mistakes, turning out as a young woman addressing her longing to Cheng. The video illustrates the emotional and social isolation experienced by city dwellers who yearn for heartfelt comfort. The delicate visual and mise en scène also drop hints about the sentimental beauty – the false hopes that we encounter every now and then.
