Izumi Kato Trio of Otherworldly Bronzes

A colossal bronze sculpture trio mysteriously appears like islands in the midst of cerulean waves covering the ground of K11 Sculpture Park.

Izumi Kato's enigmatic humanoid sculptures, appearing for the first time in bronze in the artist's almost 30-year-long practice, are a variation from the stone series that began in 2016, with stones originally collected from a landfill near the artist's seaside studio in Hong Kong. The bronze trio mimics the primitive shape of the stones yet showcase a marked departure in terms of material. They extend the artist's fascination with depicting a mystical past and provenance of such alien-like totems, which could equally come from a distant future as well.

Kato further transforms the outdoor area on the sixth floor of K11 MUSEA into a fully site-specific experience, creating an island in the midst of blue seas, echoing the waterfront position of Victoria Dockside.

Isa Genzken's Rose II Blooms at Victoria Dockside as Asia's Tallest Flower

Asia's tallest rose has arrived at Victoria Dockside! The first-in-Asia showcase of Rose II (2007) by internationally acclaimed German sculptor Isa Genzken marks the launch of Art Karnival: A grand celebration of world-class art at K11 MUSEA. Like the act of presenting a rose to a loved one, the arrival of Genzken's rose is like a gesture of warmth and compassion for the wider community of Hong Kong.

This signature artwork by the artist is a 8.5-metre-tall monumental stemmed rose that sprouts at the edge of Victoria Dockside — in full bloom against Hong Kong's iconic skyline. Made of steel, aluminium and lacquer, Rose II was shown for the first time in New York in 2010 at the Museum of Modern Art. With its supersized scale, inorganic materials and organic subject matter, the blooming rose forms a surreal juxtaposition next to the soaring skyscrapers of cities such as New York and Hong Kong.

Born in 1948, Isa Genzken is a crucial figure in contemporary art, continuously experimenting with materials, techniques and forms of display in sculpture across four decades. She is particularly active in exploring the links between modern architecture and urban spaces through her outdoor sculptures. She represented Germany at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, and was also the subject of major solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Bern (2019); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2015); The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2013); and New Museum, New York (2010). Her work is included in the collection of Gemeentemuseum, The Hague; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, amongst others.
